Building a More Resilient European
Supply Chain
Silicon and silicon carbide are foundational materials for semiconductor manufacturing. Europe’s access to these materials is affected by limited availability of high-quality quartz, insufficient domestic processing capacity and the environmental footprint of current production routes. ReSiLient addresses these connected challenges through new primary and secondary production pathways.

The Approach
ReSiLient combines two complementary routes designed to reinforce Europe’s silicon and silicon carbide raw-material value chains. The project develops these routes with partners from across the full value chain and validates their relevance for future industrial uptake.
PRIMARY ROUTE
European Mineral Resources
The primary route investigates domestic aplite and olivine minerals as alternative feedstocks. These abundant resources could help diversify Europe’s access to silica and support future silicon and silicon carbide production.
SECONDARY ROUTE
Recovering Value from Industrial Streams
The secondary route focuses on silicon- and silica-rich industrial by-products, waste streams and quartz crucible scrap. ReSiLient explores how these materials can be recovered, refined and returned to productive use.
Both routes feed Europe’s silicon and silicon carbide semiconductor raw-material value chains.
Key Processes
The project applies processes including hydrometallurgical leaching, agglomeration, hydrogen plasma refining and carbothermic conversion. Together, these processes support the development of integrated production routes for metallurgical-grade silicon and high-purity silicon carbide.
Raw-material producers

Semiconductor manufacturers
ReSiLient brings together raw-material producers, recyclers, technology developers, research organisations and semiconductor manufacturers. This full value-chain structure enables project solutions to be developed with industrial requirements in mind, assessed by end users and prepared for future market adoption.
